What is Shrove Tuesday and why do churches serve pancakes?
Shrove Tuesday falls on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday – so is always 47 days before Easter Sunday. The date varies each year but will always be between February 3 and March 9. in the United States, it is also known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday.
As the day before Lent, Shrove Tuesday is the perfect time to get rid of any last minute indulgences – and use up any fatty foods. Many Christians give up certain foods (like sweets or fats, or certain meats) for Lent. Lent is a time of fasting and prayer for many Christians, so enjoy pancakes on Shrove Tuesday as your last indulgence before giving up foods you love!
